Bond Fest

The annual Bond Festival of Soccer makes its return next week, announcing to all that autumn is here and the athletes of fall are ready to take their mark.

Approximately 30 soccer teams from around the area will trek to Trumansburg Wednesday, Aug. 23, nine days after practices officially opened, to play scrimmages before the 2017 season kicks off later that week. The festival is in its ninth showing after getting its start Aug. 26, 2009.

It honors Trumansburg icon Chris Bond, who founded the boys soccer program in 1977 and was the only varsity coach for 29 years at the school. He died in 2007 after a 14-month battle with esophageal cancer.

“He has had an impact on thousands of kids," Trumansburg boys varsity head coach Jason Hodge said during a brief ceremony that first year. "That's why we're here today. To celebrate Chris."

The soccer community is still celebrating Chris with Hodge leading the efforts on the day; then-girls varsity head coach Margaret Allen assisted that inaugural year.

The teams rotate amongst the four full-size fields and one smaller field put together by Trumansburg personnel on the varsity baseball field plateau until around 12:45 p.m. Each team will have four 25-minute scrimmages, Hodge said, so as to comply with NYSPHSAA regulations of only 100 minutes of scrimmage within one day.
