Mildred Cecil (Mullen) Whitmarsh of Spencer, NY, passed away peacefully at 4:12 p.m. on September 24, 2016. Mid was born on May 26 1922 in Scriba, NY, the youngest child of the late Charles L. Mullen and Gertrude Amanda (Groff) Mullen. She resided in Oswego, NY until 1939 when she moved to Spencer to spend the summer with her sister and brother-in-law. There she met the love of her life and future husband, Richard Charles Whitmarsh, and they were married on September 21, 1941. Together, they raised three sons: Charles John, David Richard, and Robert Henry Whitmarsh. Mid worked alongside her husband for many years at Whitmarsh Quality Meats, which was a local meat market. She also worked at Evergreen Florists, which was owned by her father-in-law John Monroe Whitmarsh. During World War II she worked at the Eclipse Machine Division in Elmira, NY. Later after the meat market closed, she worked at the Spencer Co-op and Possinger’s Grocery, and retired from the Spencer Big “M” meat department. She delivered Meals on Wheels until she was well into her 80s, as well as being a lifelong Grange member. Mid was pre-deceased by her husband Richard, grandson Thomas Whitmarsh, great-great grandson Jacob Whitmarsh, and her four siblings: Annabelle Jacobs, Gertrude Symborski, Charles Leonard Mullen, and Gaylord Mullen. She is survived by: her three sons, Charles John (Sharon), David (Cynthia), and Robert (Carrie) Whitmarsh, along with nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, who all loved her dearly.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home at 56 N. Main St. in Spencer, NY, on October 11 at 1 p.m. with Reverend Richard Vanderpoel officiating. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on October 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Spencer, NY, immediately following the service.
