The Russell I. Doig Middle School in Trumansburg has been selected as one of twelve Northeast school teams to attend the 2019-2020 Northeast Farm to School Institute at Shelburne Farms in Vermont. Shelburne Farms, along with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) and Vermont FEED, offer this year-long professional development program to support selected schools that are designing and implementing effective school-wide Farm to School (FTS) programs.

The Trumansburg Central School District (TCSD) formally launched its own FTS program in April and their five-member team will travel to Shelburne, VT at the end of June to participate in the 2019-2020 Institute. While there they will develop their own school-wide comprehensive FTS Action Plan for curriculum development, local procurement, utilizing outdoor learning spaces, and cultivating family and community connections.

The team from Russell I. Doig will consist of district teaching and food service staff, parents, other community members and a representative from the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Rosemarie Hanson, team member and Food Service Director at TCSD, is dedicated to improving student’s access to locally grown, healthy foods.

"We're really lucky to have a school community that includes teachers, parents, farmers and chefs who really care about sustainable farming systems and serving kids delicious, healthy, affordable food,” Hanson said. “Attending the Shelburne Institute is a great opportunity for us, and we hope to leave there with the tools we need to give our FTS program real momentum.”

Shelburne Farms is a nonprofit organization committed to cultivating and inspiring learning about a sustainable future. Vermont FEED is a FTS Partnership project of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT). Using their “3C Model” they act as a catalyst for change through the Cafeteria, Classroom, and Community.

Other schools in the program include: The Academy School in Brattleboro, VT; The Berne-Knox Westerlo Central School District in Berne, NY; Etna-Dixmont School in Etna, ME; Innovation Academy Charter School in Tyngsboro, MA; Janet S. Munt Family Room in Burlington, VT; Naugatuck Public Schools in Naugatuck, CT; Providence Public School District in Providence, RI; Robert V. Connors Elementary School in Lewiston, ME; Williamstown Middle/High School, Williamstown in VT; Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union in Hartland, VT; and Windham Northeast Supervisory Union in Westminster, VT.
