At 12:40 p.m. on Dec. 28, New York State Police responded to a reported fire at 244 N. Applegate Road in the town of Enfield. Troops and fire personnel were dispatched to the home after a neighbor called 911 but wasn’t sure if anyone was inside. The first trooper to arrive on the scene noticed heavy flames and smoke emanating from the residence. The trooper attempted to enter but couldn’t do so safely. Enfield Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene and began battling the blaze. They later located 72-year-old Helen L. Freelove deceased inside.
Freelove was taken to Lourdes Hospital, where an autopsy will be performed. At this time, there hasn’t been a determination made about the cause of the fire. At this time, it remains an open investigation. Investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and the New York State Police Forensic Identification unit were also on the scene. Troopers were assisted by New York State Park Police, Trumansburg Village Police, and the New York State Environmental Conservation Police.
