New County Appointment

ITHACA -- Following a committee search, the Tompkins County Legislature on Tuesday officially appointed Karen W. Baer as the county’s newest director of human rights.

Baer assumes the post left by Shawn Martel Moore, who took a position with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City in February.

Baer arrives to Tompkins from the city of Geneva, where she’s been the executive director of the Geneva Human Rights Commission since 1997. She holds a bachelor’s degree of science from Cornell University. She is also a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Law.

The appointment follows a months-long national search spearheaded by a nine-member county committee of various stakeholders, including the Human Rights Commission, the county legislature and the county personnel department.
