Village of Lansing Code Enforcement Officer Mike Scott speaks during a planning board meeting from this past spring

After the move of TJ Maxx downtown, Lansing residents can anticipate the arrival of two new franchises instead of one: a Dollar Tree store and a Planet Fitness. The Planet Fitness will be moving from the Shops at Ithaca Mall, located across the street from their new location.

At the planning board meeting last night, the plan to introduce the two businesses to 2309 Triphammer Road cleared another hurdle, as the board said that only a few clarifications were necessary before a special permit could be issued to begin renovations.

The plan is seeking to renovate the facade of the building, as well as the facade of the Big Lots next door. A special permit was necessary, Mike Scott said, because of rules regarding the number of parking spots necessary and because of the height of the new signage; current rules prohibit facades higher than 35 feet.

The new Cayuga Mall additions would likely not be open until at least the holidays, the presenter estimated. Aside from exterior changes, the work would also involve emergency renovations of the roof, building a dividing wall to separate out the currently-open interior and all internal building.

The board also touched on the issue of increasing the “pedestrian-friendliness” of the village by having more sidewalks and walkways. The board examined previous walkway implementation plans from 1995 and 2000, and decided to continue to examine the issue in the future.

Arrowhead Ventures also submitted a request to have 18 single-family senior housing units instead of 12, which the board deemed a minor change. The site will continue as planned on Oakcrest Road.

The next planning board meeting will take place on July 30.
