Road Closure

Phase 2 of the NYSEG utility work in the Southside neighborhood is beginning. The work will be near the 400 block South Geneva St., 300 block North Titus Ave, 200-300 blocks South Titus Ave, 401 South Titus Ave., 502 South Albany St, and the South Plain St. Bridge. According to  NYSEG, the gas main replacement is part of a mandated program by PSC to replace some of the aging infrastructures in that area.

Some of the replaced infrastructures have been prone to leak and are classified as leak-prone. The DDS Companies will install new 6” or 12” gas mains and service connections in the project area. The new main will provide more consistent operating pressure and increased reliability to the customers in the area. The new gas main will have an expected life of 20 years or more. Phase 1 of the work is nearing completion and phase 2 is starting now.

During phase 2 some properties will have trenches in their front lawns or across driveways. Residents are encouraged to take pictures of pre-construction to ensure their property will be restored. Advance notice will be given for each planned half-day of gas service. In Phase 3, the disturbed areas will be restored to better or equal conditions.

Throughout Phase 2, several city blocks will be closed to speed up the work. Alternate route detours will be established. Residents will still be able to access their homes on closed streets but might encounter a brief delay while work is underway. There will be some minor delays as motorists should use caution in the work zone and be considerate of the people biking, working and walking in the area. Permanent restoration work will occur during Phase 3 while the restoration during Phases 1 and 2 will be temporary.

Phase 2 work is underway on S. Geneva St and will move to S. Titus Ave next. Work near the Plain Street Bridge will continue until late August. Work is expected to be completed by December 31, 2019. Since construction is consistently subject to change due to inclement weather or unexpected findings, the City of Ithaca will be meeting with DDS Companies and NYSEG regularly to keep an eye on the work schedule.

The best way to get new information about the project schedule is to speak with the on-site construction supervisor.
