At 2:24 a.m. on Sept. 18, the Ithaca Police and Ithaca Fire Departments responded to the intersection of N. Cayuga and Cascadilla Streets for a report of two Lime bikes on fire. Once officers arrived on the scene, the fire was extinguished without incident and no property was further damaged.
At 2:26 a.m., while Ithaca Police was still checking the area, officers received another call about a Lime Bike on Fire at the 400 block of N. Geneva Street. Again, the fire was extinguished without incident and there was no further property damage
While checking the area of the second fire, a fourth Lime Bike was reported on fire on the 400 block of N. Albany Street at 2:57 a.m. As with the other bikes, the fire was put out without incident and there was no further property damage.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fires. Ithaca Police are asking any witnesses, members of the public with information regarding the possible identities of any people involved, or residents with residential cameras to contact the Ithaca Police Department.
A Lime Bike spokesperson reached out to clarify that the bikes themselves did not spontaneously catch fire, or that the fire was the result of some internal malfunction. The bike's handlebars were set on fire. They said vandalism is rare among their products, so it does not sound like this is part of a nationwide epidemic.
