Ithaca Police officers received several complaints of a subject trespassing and harassing multiple people in downtown Ithaca. The suspect was also the subject of recent stalking complaints. Once officers were able to located the subject, who was identified as Richard Johnston, he was hostile and resistant to the officer’s efforts to stop him.
As officers were attempting to bring Johnston into custody, an arresting officer’s head struck a tree trunk causing him to momentarily lose consciousness. Following that, Johnston was taken into custody without further incident. The officer was transported via ambulance to an area hospital where he is being treated. The severity of the officer’s injuries remain unknown at this time.
Johnston will be arraigned later today for stalking in the third degree and multiple counts of trespassing and harassment. Additional charges will be forthcoming.
