A Cornell University maintenance shop was saved from a fire early Saturday morning. The Ithaca Fire Department was dispatched to 275 Palm Road around 4 a.m. for the reported fire. Cornell Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) workers and Cornell Police responded to the scene as well. They found a workbench in the middle of the six bay garage burning. They were unable to completely extinguish the blaze but once firefighters arrived on the scene, they were able to put the remaining fire out.
Crews then ventilated the building and checked for fire extension. No one was injured but the cause of the fire, which seem to be electrical in nature, is under investigation. The Ithaca Fire Department credits the quick action of the EH&S responders for keeping a small fire from getting much bigger and saving the structure, the equipment and contents inside.
