Elmira Savings Bank

Work has begun to expand the former home of a Mexican restaurant in the city’s West End.

Purchased by Elmira Savings Bank last winter, the two-story property at 602 W. State. St. The $200,000 project, which involves some facade improvements, a remodeled interior and an addition to the back of the building, will continue throughout the winter and be open for business in early 2017.

The demolition of a house adjacent to the property was carried out sometime last week for the paving of a new parking lot for the bank. The city had previously rejected plans for the site to be turned into green space, as the bank had purchased several low-income houses adjacent to the property with plans to demolish them, rather than rent them, a proposal which created some controversy in City Hall. •
