On Thursday, September 17 at the Dryden Town Hall, Art Weaver will give a talk entitled “Small Wind Energy for Rural Communities”. The talk will begin at 6 p.m., and there will be refreshments and a Q&A session following.

Art is the president of Weaver Wind Energy, and his presentation will introduce community members to the many ways small wind systems can enhance the quality of life in rural communities concerned about energy independence, utility grid reliability, climate disruption, and the preservation of rural landscapes. Like utility scale wind (systems over 100 kW), which is making an important contribution to our region’s clean energy future, small wind systems (less than 100 kW) provide a green energy option. As a source of distributed energy used onsite, small wind in addition allows landowners to fully own the energy generation and benefit directly from a variety of state and federal incentives.

Small wind systems have a unique role to play in our transition to a sustainable energy future. With night and winter operation, small wind complements solar and makes possible a year-round 100% renewable energy profile for homes, farms, schools, and businesses.

The presentation will cover the principles of small wind energy generation: how it works, what energy production you can expect, and key siting, maintenance, safety, and durability considerations for landowners. Art will discuss the costs and incentives for small wind systems as well as how to identify an installer. He’ll explain what is meant by “wind resource” and how you can determine the potential of your site for small wind. He will also address remote netmetering regulations and how urban businesses can take advantage of them.

The presentation will conclude with an overview of the local permitting process and new national certification requirements for small wind systems. Please join us for an enlightening hour and bring your questions to make this a great community learning experience. The Dryden Town Hall is located at 93 East Main Street, Dryden, New York 13053.
