This newly built home located on 305 Old Gorge Road in Ithaca — it was constructed earlier this year — is Energy Star qualified and features energy-conserving features that make it 20-30 percent more efficient than standard homes. (Photo provided by Jolene Rightmyer-Macolini)

A Natural Fit

by Julissa Trevino

A newly built 2009 home in the Southwoods Development area of Ithaca separates itself from the other neighborhood homes with a lovely and deep burgundy exterior and white trim.

Walking into the house on 305 Old Gorge Road, a two-story foyer creates for a grand entrance. Large windows bring in light and a spacious, quiet front porch is perfect for nice weather.

With four bedrooms, two baths and one half baths, the home has an attached two-car garage and approximately 2,800 square feet of living space.

The house has a sizeable living room, dining room, family room and kitchen on the mid-level. The upper level holds the master bedroom and three other large bedrooms.

A gas fireplace in the second living room, which could be a family room, brightens and warms up the whole house. Multiple ceiling fans give the house an extra cooling system, though the house comes complete with air conditioning.

The kitchen, which comes furnished with new appliances including a refrigerator, microwave and stove, and the bathroom are lined with ceramic tile; the bedrooms have wall-to-wall carpeting; and the rest of the house, the dining and living rooms, are lined with beautiful hardwood floors.

The house is within five miles of Ithaca College and Cornell University and it's just around the corner from Buttermilk State Park.

The lower level of this house has not yet been constructed, but this project can turn the basement into more living space. This spacious home is perfect for professionals and families wanting to experience a warm lifestyle. Unlike many development neighborhoods, the houses at Southwoods are individual and quaint.

Sitting on 1.31 acres of land, the house is surrounded by green grass and tall, mature trees (a rare find in development neighborhoods).

What separates this home from most others is Ithaca, though, is its energy efficiency. As an Energy Star qualified home, it is required to be at 15 percent more efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential code. It includes energy-conserving features that make them 20-30 percent more efficient than standard homes.

The Youth Leadership Corps is a new Youth Council program to connect teens (14+) with their community through volunteer service while also doing workshops for leadership building and event/outreach planning.
After two compelling opening productions, Glimmerglass Opera began its second weekend with an all-time favorite, Mozart's comic masterpiece "The Marriage of Figaro." Don't let the title fool you; with the libretto by genius collaborator Lorenzo da Ponte, this opera is presented in Italian with English projected titles. The show was a truly remarkable achievement-a seamless, clearly delineated, musically excellent, and emotionally telling performance-matched only by some unscheduled thunder and lightning theatrics outside.
